The Crystal HD is a mini pci-e card, which in the case of the Mac Mini and AppleTV, does indeed have to supplant the existing wireless card. So if your system has no wired network connection, you'll have to get an external usb one,

With Ubuntu 9.04 (haven't upgraded yet) network manager works a dream.
I plugged in an 802.11n dongle, it saw my network and remembers my
WPA2PSK key. There was an "issue" where sometimes myth would autoload
about 2 seconds before it brought up the network connection, but
(mixed blessings!) .22 takes quite a bit longer to initially load up
so I always have network by the time it's autoloaded!
