In particular, you'll rarely see rates anywhere near that high on a PCI
NIC, because the bus bandwidth just isn't there.
The value in Gigabit isn't so much that you can get 1 Gb/sec to a single
machine -- although, with the right hardware, you can get pretty close.
It's that more machines can use the same switch uplink without saturating
it.
