If you are only using storage groups, then no. However, there are a
couple reason why you'd want to define a directory even if using
storage groups. First, if you want to be able to insert a CD/DVD into
the frontend's drive and play videos off of it, then you'd want to
define that as a local directory. Also, ISO files don't yet work with
storage groups, so if you need to play ISOs they need to be in an NFS
or Samba mounted directory and then specified in the frontend setup.
