True, but I don't care to encrypt my traffic, I use MAC address filtering to 
prevent people using my bandwidth, but if anyone wants to read my traffic they 
are welcome to do so. Should I decide to plan the overthrow of the government 
I would probably communicate some other way.

Sending data thousands of miles in the clear, and then being concerned about 
the last few feet has always seemed silly to me.

You are essentially correct, but the rules on encryption are tricky. Even 
morse code could be considered "encryption" of a sort, but it's a well-known 
"standard". I'm not sure how "well-known" an algorithm would have to be to be 
legal.
