[mythtv-users] IR working but HD-PVR crashing

Finally I got everything up and running after several days of non stop (read tiring) 'mythtv hacking'.
I hooked up everything to my big screen TV and now I have reached the final GOTCHA!

I am running Mythbuntu 9.10 with Hauppauge HD-PVR hooked up to my Myth box, acting both as a backend 
and frontend. I have the IR part working on HD-PVR, both receiving and transmitting signals correctly. 
I am using a Radio Shack RS15-2116 remote. The IR blaster is working perfectly and Myth can change channels. 
But now I cannot record a show more than a minute or so. Everything gets locked up in Mythfrontend, the 
IR stops working. The HD-PVR keeps on doing stuff - the red recording light on front and the blue light 
on top of HD-PVR are both on. Even if I cycle the power on the HD-PVR, I cannot 
watch TV on Myth anymore. I have to reboot my MythTV box to get back to normal.

Same thing with normal TV watching, I can watch it for a minute or so and then it locks up.

I am very aware of the caveats put out by several including Jarod on using HD-PVR with IR as it conflicts with 
the IR polling. At this point I would like to have a solution or some solution on how I can use HD-PVR along 
with MythTV, even if that means forgoing the use of IR on HD-PVR. At least I need to have my Myth box 
change channels on the STB box (a Motorola DCH3200). Are any of these solutions feasible 
(in decreasing order of preference)?

1. Can I use only the IR blasting (transmitting) on HD-PVR to change channels and use a separate device to use 
for remote (IR receiving)? Is this likely to cause HD-PVR from crashing? If this may work, I can hook 
up a MCE-USB and is a relatively easy fix.

2. Can I forgo all IR activity on HD-PVR and use a separate device to use for both IR receiving and 
transmitting? What will be a good IR device: USB-UIRT?

3. If I knew this earlier, I could have planned to use the firewire port on my STB to change channels, 
but my Zotac ION 330 motherboard doesn't have firewire port built-in. Bummer! Is there any other option 
to change channels on a STB box, like USB?
