Nb: I've tried a few times, albeit only briefly, and have, of course,
been unable to get the box to segfault again, even with the prior
nvidia driver where I swear it did...

Huh, interesting. Does seem like a possibility. I'll try to poke at
it some one of these nights, if not, then during the holiday break
(which I seem to be looking forward to even more than usual this year).
