The theme downloader/chooser can already show you which themes are
newer than your currently installed version.  Another feature that has
been talked about but not implemented yet is to optionally have the
frontend check this once a day.  It will probably be something along
the lines of having the backend pro-actively fetch a list of the themes
on the download site and their current versions.  The frontends could
then check this list on the backend and toggle a statetype on the
main menu or display an alert dialog to inform the user that their
currently selected theme had an update available in the theme downloader.
