Most of the digital tuner cards you can buy won't be able to record
encrypted content, so you're really looking at a rental.  The goal is
to keep the cost of that rental as low as possible, so renting a cable
card is cheaper than renting a STB.

If you want to inquire with Cablevision about their support for cable
cards, you might want to just tell them you're thinking of getting a
TiVo and ask if it would work with that and what the charge would be
for a cable card.  If you mention MythTV or the HDHR Prime, they're
likely to get confused and just say they don't support that because
it's not on their script.
