I know Jared Wilson made some required transmitter patches to
lirc-0.8.7 (cvs at the time)..  I'm not blasting anymore though, so
just using 0.8.6 from *buntu stock...  I honestly cannot remember if
using the cvs version made the lockups go away or not..  Like I said
though, it only every locked up when starting lircd though - never
random freezes like you describe..
