Sounds like he wants to be able to watch something else beside what's being recorded.

I know it goes against the Myth philosophy, but he could set things up to send the RF feed to the TV set directly, and 
watch "live" that way, while the recording continues. This obviously won't work if an STB of some sort is required, and a 
second one is not available.

Of course the first complaint would be "why can't I pause, rewind etc. and why am I seeing all those commercials?".

Canceling and re-recording would also work, I'm not sure of the best way to do that, it's never come up for me.
