I did just that on my server and it got offline for 3 days.

It turned out not to be ubuntu 10.04 fault for the major items:
1- I didn't install a linux-kernel package, instead building a custom
package with my own kernel. So the upgrade didn't install any new
kernel and as such, when I rebooted, with no kernel configured it was
kind of a bummer. Not having physical access to the machine didn't
help
2- A disk of my RAID1 array (which contains the boot partition) was
marked as degraded. GRUB doesn't want to boot a boot partition on a
degraded array! I learnt the hard way stupid grub
This is what took the longest to recover, as not even the netboot
recovery disk I'm using could be used

The thing the upgrader did screw up.

It removed Apache Tomcat 5.5 plain and simple. Tomcat 5.5 isn't
available in 10.04, it's been over a week since I upgraded, I'm yet to
find a way to make my code works with tomcat 6... not happy

You're going to face another much bigger problem going from 8.04 to 10.04.
You'll have to upgrade from 0.21 to 0.23... This can turn ugly... And
unfortunately, this is not something you can roll progressively. You
must upgrade all frontends and all backends at once
so your strategy of using a new machine will be of very little help.

Just upgrading my server on trunk gives my wife serious reasons to be
mad at me. Like last week, there was an upgrade of the mythvideo
database schema.
The frontend would try to run the schema upgrade, but it just hangs
forever.. it seems that the mythvideo database upgrade only works when
run on the main backend machine..
And of course, on that day, as I didn't launch mythvideo to check if
my upgrade went smoothly, I decided to be away from home for two
days...

Imagine the grief my wife gave me, and the 20 minutes speech on how
I'm wasting my time on something I don't get any money for...
