Mike:
First, I want you to know I have to utmost respect for you. You have an
incredible amount of knowledge of the inner workings of the MythTV software
and are willing to help those who need it. I am also in the software
business (process control) and have to deal with my "customers" on a daily
basis often times answering the same questions over and over again. My
approach to "educating" my customers is similar to yours. I never delete an
e-mail, especially the ones that I write. When someone asks me a question a
second time, I simply re-send my original answer and I rarely get asked a
third time. You have the luxury of just sending a link to the Gossamer
threads or Trak and you even throw in the tidbits about paying attention to
specific parts of those responses. Kind of like teaching someone to fish
instead of feeding them outright. I'm sure the community appreciates your
passion for this project.
Now, I have been running trunk for several years and I do subscribe to all
three mailing lists (commits, dev, and users). I run with the debug option
set and capture crashes when I encounter them hoping to help make this
project even better. These e-mails typically top out between 75 and 200
e-mails a day and I try to look at all of them. But I'd be lying if I said
I understand them all. I typically skim those that refer to the software
that caters to the European market (I'm in the US), deal with satellite
reception, hardware that I do not own, etc. So I *do* follow the commits
list, but obvisously, I have missed something dealing with AutoExpire and my
searches have not turned up anything useful. My problem is not dire, as I
know I must watch how much disk space I'm currently using. I was just
asking for possible confirmation that I may have inadervtantly changed a
setting that turns the AutoExpire on/off.
Sorry for so many words, but I have seen how sometimes curt responses are
sometimes misinterpreted as snide. I sometimes wonder how such a project is
lucky enough to get people like you who appear to be working on the software
as if being paid for it. Keep up your good work and continue to keep your
sense of humor (yes, it does show through in your responses).
