Am I confused? The logging options are separate, and done differently.
This is so they can default to "important,general" if you don't uncomment
MYTH_VERBOSE in the conf.d file.

Quite the opposite. Gentoo's CONFIG_PROTECT already protects any changes
you make to files in both the conf.d and init.d directories. It's actually
the proper and best way to do it in the Gentoo world, I believe.
