512mb is sufficient for VDPAU. 1GB will provide no additional benefit
with current content - perhaps it will be necessary for future high
resolution, high bitrate media.

However, if you intend to use the card for 3D acceleration, you may
actually find the extra VRAM useful for that - if I recall, a GT240 is
loosely equivalent to the 8800GT, and that was a card which did
perform slightly better with 1GB of RAM.
