Intel XvMC used to work only with mpeg2. The version 2.3 and 2.4 drivers
did not do more than SD resolution, but the 2.9.1 provides full HD size
frames:
Output of xvmcinfo run on my X61 laptop:
info about surface 1:
max_width=1920
max_height=1080
subpicture_max_width=1920
subpicture_max_height=1080
chroma_format:
XVMC_CHROMA_FORMAT_420
mc_type:
format : MPEG1
accelaration start from : MOCOMP
flags:
XVMC_INTRA_UNSIGNED
Surface 0 is 16 pixels larger in both directions.
And I have played HD content (from OTA) on the laptop. For test
purposes, I hooked up my 1920x1080 monitor and it worked perfectly.
The Release notes hinted a h264 capabilities, but you may be correct on
that point. The xvmcinfo program I use may not properly report whether
this version does h264. I don't know. It is clear that Intel's coders
intend to introduce that capability but I have no idea when.

The letters T and G are close to each other on the keyboard
and sometimes a typographic error may be made, whereby
one is struck when the other is intended.
Accordingly, I have determined to never, ever again terminate an
e-mail to my colleagues with the word 'Regards'.
