I had this exact problem happen to me a long time ago and it turned to
be something like what Mike describes above. The solution was to delete
a specific preference from the settings table like Mike shows above. It
actually could have been the exact same thing Mike describes but I don't
remember the details since it's been a while. In any case, OP should do
what Mike suggests and that will most likely fix the problem.

On a related note, "corrupted DB" in this context is not something to
be worried about since it only affects frontend settings. Nothing that
would require a database restore, IMHO.
