I don't think the activity light distinguishes between writes and
reads.  Just because the light is blinking doesn't necessarily mean
you're writing to the drive.

I don't recommend putting /var/log on a RAM drive.  Modern SSD
lifetimes are already pretty long and the utility of log files that
live longer than your uptime usually outweighs any increased longevity
of the SSD.
