I was having a tearing problem that persisted no matter what I 
changed: vsync modes, cables, port (VGA vs. HDMI). Finally, I 
realized I had turned on my Sony TV's version of "motion 
compensation", which they call "CineMotion". Since disabling that, 
the tear is gone.

The moral of the story: all those bells and whistles TV manufacturers 
use to try to distinguish themselves from the competition sometimes 
do more harm than good. Turn 'em all off and try again.
