I have a zodiac ION board and run ubuntu also. I also remember seeing
warning messages in the X.org log file saying the nvidia driver
"Failed to determine GPU name". But mythfrontend did NOT give me any
errors about VDPAU playback not working. So I think the warning in
the X.org log doesn't prevent VDPAU from working.

But I never did get smooth playback on my ION board. I got tons of
"prebuffering pause" errors and also "video is 15.456 frames behind
audio, dropping frames to catch up" errors. I'm waiting for an
updated 190 series driver from nvidia that actually works. Then I
will try getting the ION board working again.
