ok. With lirc 0.8.4a (what I have on this production front end at the 
moment) I did the following:
root at myththeatre2:# rmmod -f -v lirc_imon
rmmod lirc_imon, wait=no force
root at myththeatre2:# modprobe -v lirc_imon debug=1
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.23-chw-4/misc/lirc_imon.ko debug=1
root at myththeatre2:#

And received the following in /var/log/messages after modprobe:

It is worth noting that it says it found a VFD endpoint but I actually 
have an LCD.
