Another update :) The machine with the ASUS P5K happily runs the GT220 so I
am thinking now that PCIE x16 is what is needed. I have the P5K running P5KR
bios for other things but there is definitely no PCIe 2.0 support anywhere
in the specs.

So rather than screw around with the bios on the original m/board, I'll just
grab one with PCIe x16 support and be done with it.....
