I have had this happen I think 6 times.  The first three times I took the
machine down to a pro and he basically did what you did but then tried a
good CPU at which point we got a new MB and that fixed it.  More recently, I
strip everything out and put the MB/CPU/Case/PS in the attic and get another
one.  The point is, even a pro will just do what you did and substitute
parts until it works.  I also tried resetting the BIOS but that never
worked.
