Also the VDPAU API can stay consistent across hardware revisions (if
it was designed well). But there are big changes in the the drivers
from one hardware revision to the next, and open sourcing and
supporting that amount of code is expensive and time consuming to do.
Also you can assume that nvidia believes there is some value in
keeping some of the workings of their GPUs secret. Whereas opening up
the VDPAU API doesn't reveal much about their actual hardware. You can
disagree with their philosophy but I can see why they believe it is a
good idea to do it the way they are.
