Run aplay and play a wav file using different outputs and see what happens.
If your alsa defaults are set up correctly, you will hear your desired output
when you don't override the device setting on aplay. You can also set the
output device, direct sound directly to you preferred output, and see that
way if it's on/enabled/unmuted.
