I read in the nv forum that nVidia is breaking vdpau out to a separate
package from the nvidia drivers. Where did you update to 190.36 from?
Note that I could be wrong about this I do not use ubuntu.

I didn't think it was going to happen that quickly?

This was a routine update as offered by the update manager.

Couldn't be sure, I thought the NVIDIA stuff came down from JYA's server.

http://www.avenard.org/files/ubuntu-repos/testing/?C=M;O=D doesn't look like its updated those files, apart from recent sources and 
packages changes last night.
