This is getting a little off-topic, but I'll end the thread just by 
saying that it was a little more tricky in my case, as it was a work 
laptop and I didn't have the admin password.  With the USB stick 
inserted, the grub menu would appear and I could boot and login as a 
user under Windows.  I then had to do a registry hack to not require the 
admin password when booting from the XP install CD.  Then, I was able to 
boot the laptop from the install disk and do a fixmbr or whatever the 
command was.
