Mike, did you ever update the firmware on the HDPVR at all? If you haven't,
chances are you don't have the latest version. I don't know how to tell
which version you do have. I do know that the only way to update the
firmware will require a windows PC; it's possible that the HDPVR drivers for
windows can tell you what version is installed. Unless your HDPVR was
manufactured after May 2009 it has an older firmware. You can get the
latest here: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support_hdpvr.html.

I don't know what the high quality profile default settings are as I changed
them long ago. In Setup -> TV Settings -> Playback on screen 3 your profile
should show VDPAU for the high def resolutions. If it says something else
(ffmpeg or xvmc for example), then you are not using VDPAU. The NVidia
chipset on your video card will determine your deinterlacer choices as well.
If you have a 9xxx series or better you should be able to use Advanced (2x,
Hw) as your deinterlacer, which seems to be the best one. See the Wiki
documentation for editing the playback profiles, although it's all a series
of select boxes so it's fairly easy to muddle through. I only have an HDPVR
as my capture device and my camcorder outputs h264 videos, so I have if rez
> 0 0 -> vdpau & vdpau as my only setting. If you have a mix of video
recording devices you may want to have a more detailed profile.
