Thanks for all your help Doug!  I figured out there is something wrong
with ALSA and it is still attempting to use PulseAudio (which doesnt
exist, obviously).  I am unsure why VLC Player worked, but alsamixer
complains about pulseaudio timeouts so at least I know what the
problem is now!
