Nice patch.  I assume you decide the spdif, then modify the volume, then
encode it again.  Then it goes to the TV where it is decoded again.  This
decode/ encode/ decode leads to a loss of quality but that may not be
important if you are just listening over TV speakers.  For purists, you
would want to just pass the signal through.  If it is more important to
control the volume than to have the least possible distortion this looks
like a nice way to go.
