[mythtv-users] Choppy video

Hi Matthew,

I was seeing much the same thing as you were. All of my videos (HD, xvid,
etc) would sometimes start up choppy, or would start out smooth, and then
become choppy to the point of freezing on the screen. When they froze, I
would hit the fast forward button on my remote, and they would start playing
again for a few minutes. I have two identical myth boxes, and I noticed
that this behavior only happened on one of them. When I started poking
around, I noticed that the myth box that did not have the issue had a
different version of mplayer installed.

On the troubled box, I had the mplayer from atrpms installed:
mplayer-1.0-68_snap20090419.fc10.i386.rpm
On the "good" box, I had mplayer from rpmfusion installed:
mplayer-1.0-0.104.20090204svn.fc10.i386

I uninstalled the atrpms mplayer version, and installed the rpmfusion
instead. HD playback got much better. Still not the greatest, but I blame
that on the processing power. All of my other videos now playback
smoothly. I'm not saying this is the fix for you, but it may be something
you want to look into.
