I saw the post a few days ago about the myth "frontend" for xbmc, and I
thought i'd experiment with it.  So far, while simple compared to Myth, I've
found XBMC to be a decent product.  I was able to quickly setup my sound and
video, and it even supports VDPAU out of the box!  Unfortunately, after
playing with it for a while, the I made it crash while playing a video, and
now my sound is messed up.  I have a sound blaster live! value card that I
use for sound. I use the digital out port and run it to the spdif input on
my 5.1 receiver.  This configuration has worked well for months with myth,
but after I crashed XBMC, the only way I can get sound to play is if I use
XBMC and play a file that has AC3 sound.  When I originally built this
system, everything seemed to "just work" as in I was able to play any type
sound through my receiver, be it music with rhythmbox, or VLC, or whatever,
but now the only thing that will play sound is XBMC, and then only if it's a
surround sound file. I've been through everything I know to check in terms
of mixer settings, and things being set to "mute" or whatever, but I can't
seem to get my system back to how it was before I installed XBMC. I've been
through the comprehensive sounds problems guide from the ubuntu forums (
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 ) and i've only made minor
progress.  I updated my system to 9.04 last week and I started having
trouble with myth, where it would seg fault whenever I stopped playing a
video file of any kind.  After I reinstalled the sound packages as indicated
in the ubuntu forum I mentioned above, that problem has gone away, however I
still have no sound from myth.

I'm a novice when it comes to sound, so does anyone have any
recommendations?  Obviously this seem relevant:
