2 Suggestions. 

1.
Make sure your asound.conf is setup correctly, this is often the problem.

Also with nforce (and other IEC sound outputs you may need to turn the volume
down to 0 (using alsamixer or other similar mixing app)

2. 
Does the Mobo provide audio through the HDMI connection or do you need to use one
of the converter cables to connect the S/PDIF output to it (as is the case with
many of the video cards with HDMI?
