Learn to read MAN pages.  Right at the top of the one for pstree, it 
explains your question.  A star indicates the number of running 
instances.  If the item is under a parent item of the same name, and in 
curly braces, then it is counting child threads.  So... you have one 
backend running with seventeen threads, two instances of mythtranscode, 
one instance of mythwelcome with two threads, and one frontend with nine 
threads.
