I guess just to put in my $0.02 - I currently record some OTA HD
channels and watch them on my SD TV using a 5200 and mx 4000 for
playback.  Some recordings have about a 3" black border around them,
and I just use zoom (full zoom if I remember correctly) to get it
looking right.  I haven't done anything special to have it 'down
convert' the recordings.
