If the rental company made copies and started renting them out, that
would be "unauthorized distribution". Renting a purchased copy is not.
Once you buy something you can basically do whatever you want with it,
and that includes renting or selling it. Copyright stops you from
making copies and distributing those copies (or showing it to large
numbers of people), but it doesn't stop you from renting.
