Which videocard was it ?

For getting native HDMI sound via the DVI port you would need alsa to at
least see a HDMI audio port ; it doesn't do that for any video cards.

I'd love to see an ALSA drivers able to use audio on any of the 9xxx cards ;
would open a great range of possibilities.
Right now only the 9300/9400 IGP gives you that possibility.

Not if their are using a SPDIF jumper cable ; then it is just about getting
the SPDIF port working
