Why would I expect that?

Why would I expect that a device would actively downgrade an audio 
source from a certain type of input?

As I stated, if it was a simple pass through, cool, I wouldn't expect 
the higher end codecs to work, but AC3 or DTS downgraded just because it 
came from an HDMI input?
