Yes, there's a quirk in the buffer length calculation within lirc_dev  
that is required to get it to function correctly with lirc_i2c, so  
lirc_i2c is just fine, its a minor issue in the lirc_dev kernel code.

What Marc said. The kernel is already in the wild, you can download it  
straight out of the Fedora build system. If you're bound by the use of  
3rd-party binary video drivers (or any out-of-tree drivers, for that  
matter), hopefully you're using ones packaged w/auto-rebuild dkms-like  
abilities...
