I use it, works well.
Core2Duo 3.0GHz is capable of encoding a 1080i mpeg2 recording from either
my HDHR or STB in real time as I stream it over a 768K DSL connection.
Streaming keeps pretty close pace with the encoding from mpeg2 to flash, so
comercial skipping isn't much of an option for HD content. SD I can skip
forward to avoid comercials though.

Not sure about mencoder, I use ffmpeg.
