A small revision of the command line for mplayer and the BBCHD clip from 
earlier in this thread:

mplayer -nolirc -nojoystick  -vfm ffmpeg  -fps 25  -lavdopts 
fast:skiploopfilter=nonkey:threads=2   BBCHD-2min.ts

With the threads=2 setting on my core2duo the core loads reported by 
atop are more nearly equal than I saw without it, and changing the skip 
setting from all to nonkey looks as if it should be a Good Thing and 
still worked.
