That's not entirely true.  While youre not likely to find cross-vendor
support, I can use my Areca arrays with any Areca card that supports the
needed number of devices and RAID type.  I've tested this before,
bringing my 1230 in as a replacement for a 1120 at work, to try to find
some instability we had on one of our servers.
