<shrug>  "sudo -i" always worked fine for me to become root in Ubuntu.  
If you really feel you must log in as root it's not hard to find 
instructions online to set a proper root password.  It's just not a 
recommended configuration, so they don't enable it by default.

Lindows took the opposite tack -- by default you *always* logged in as root.
