in my attempt to use dvbscan i get the following:

mitchell at mythtv:~$ sudo dvbscan
/usr/share/dvb/atsc/us-Cable-Standard-center-frequencies-QAM256
Unable to query frontend status
mitchell at mythtv:~$  

What does this mean?  I googled but couldnt find any solutions


Sounds like your DVB drivers aren't loaded or installed.  Did you build them
yourself or are you just using what came with the kernel?  Check your
/var/log/messages during boot and look for DVB entries related to your card.

Make sure you have the firmware for that card as well....
