That's almost certainly what I'll end up doing.  But I was wondering if
there was an alternative.

And since no one has offered any comments on possible future support for
Hauppauge
HVR-1800 and HVR-2250 cards, I'll almost certainly stick to the original
plan using a pair
of HVR-1600 cards.  I really don't understand all the advantages of PCI
Express (PCIe) x1,
but what I was really hoping for with the 2250 was getting nearly all the
functionality of
two HVR-1600 cards in a single slot, half height board.  That might have
enabled me to fit
everything into a much smaller case.
