The primary argument isn't that people don't know about it. It is that
people aren't ready because the government program to subsidize the
converter boxes ran out of money two months before the transition date. They
provided enough funds for everybody who currently is using broadcast tv to
get 2 converter boxes. However, lots of additional people ordered them. I
suspect many people are switching to broadcast because the word is getting
out about the high quality digital signal can provide. Also lots of the
coupons were ordered and never used, but they haven't expired yet. So they
wait until they expire and then they issue more with the money that is freed
up. They should just get it over with, it isn't going to be the end of the
world if folks can't watch TV for a few weeks.
