How so?

having a partition marked as unclean and a journaling file system have
little in common. You can have one *and* the other.
Once you run fsck, it will replay the journal and mark it clean. Then
you can mount it.

Even a simple ext3 partition, if marked as unclean, linux will refuse
to mount it or only allow to mount it read-only
Run fsck on it and there you go.
