i get nadda with the aplay command above.  actually, i get: "Playing
WAVE 'a_sound.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 11025 Hz, Mono aplay:
set_params:954 Sample format non available

using the above mplayer settings i'm able to get a simple wav file to
play out of the left speaker only.  but only the first time i play it.
 if i try to play it multiple times it's like it gets cut off or
starts in the middle.
if i play an avi with AC3 content i get the machine gun static again.
no errors in the output.
