I am going to take a wild guess that 8 gigabytes of ram is enough.
(On one of the systems at least, the other has only 2gb)

Alas, in this case, it issues no diagnostics, it just sits there
eating one of the CPU cores until you kill it.  But it's not, as
best I can tell, a system resources problem.

Systems should be reasonably standard hardy, except that qt4 is
upgraded from hardy-backports to the latest version.  Other than that
I am surprised that many people aren't compiling in this environment.

I will try to downgrade my qt4 if I can.  I guess I could try
gcc 4.1 but I don't really want to.
