Technically you don't need to run a window manager to run the  
frontend, but it is not advised because some stuff doesn't work right  
without one (you may lose focus when launching things other than  
mythfrontend like if you use an external player for MythVideo or  
emulators with MythGame, etc.

What are you trying to accomplish? The answer to that might lead to a  
different/better solution.
