Yes, mythtv can control cable boxes through the firewire port if it's
active, in some instances you can also record from the firewire port.
You can try hooking the firewire port up to see if you can record anything.
After that the first thing I would suggest trying is hooking a TV with
a digital tuner (if you have one) up to the cable that runs into your
stb. MythTV can easily record any channels you can get this way with a
normal QAM tuner like the HDHomeRun or the pchdtv. You might only be
able to record local broadcast stations this way, but who knows you
might get a lot.
